As I’ve said below, Karnataka is celebrating its 50th year of creation (there was a reorganisation of most Indian states in 1956). Possibly from almost back then, a few photographs of Bangalore, courtesy the Navadarshanam Trust, via Ammu Joseph:
First, the Town Hall
Next, MG Road (South Parade)
And finally, the bane of many of our present lives: Hosur Road, Bangalore (Silkboard, can you believe this???)!!! [Update: I think it was called ‘Cemetry Road’ back then, at least so it says on this finally enlarged photograph; will check with those who remember]
hey, can’t you make the photos go bigger when clicked on?
– guess who 😀
Hey Tabula Rasam – 🙂 – I know, I know, I’m desperately trying to work out what’s going on with my lovely photees. Will get some technical help on it soon, though if tech help is too jet lagged, the pics may be as blurry as when I first tried to enlarge them. sigh.
Anyhow Dear Sir, the matter has been brought to our attention and we are doing our best to fix it. Sincerely etc. Watch this space.
Oh wow! Hosur road pic is worth framing and saving. I can see the images slightly larger by removing the trailing “thumbnail” in their names. like:

Silkboard, thumba dhanyavadagalu! Many thanks for the online tech advice… good thing too, considering Ashwin is still blurry and bleary post his Vegas experience. 🙂 I’m not much better, considering I was back home only two days ago after a New Jersey experience, but that’s another post.
Good ones. The last one (Hosur Road) pic is doing its round these days.
Really nice photographs. Had seen them sometime back somewhere else.
These are really great photos.
Can I use these photos in wikipedia??
Praveen
Hi Praveen, sorry for the delayed response. I’m not sure that I’m the person to ask for permission, really, since I received the photographs, as I said in the post, courtesy Navadarshanam Trust and via a friend. Could you check with Navadarshanam, and I’ll do my best to track down the originals too?
Thanks Anasuya for giving us a glimpse of our good old Bangalore.I just love my city..with all its hustle and bustle n what not!I’m now living in ‘Wonderful Copenhagen’..from 4 years with my family..but the yearning to return back to Namma Bengalooru is ever present! Hi Anita, glad you enjoyed the pics! And great to know you keep in touch with Bengaluru all the way from Copenhagen. You may want to have a look at another post I wrote, which gives details of more such pictures, from the turn of the last century. http://blogs.sanmathi.org/anasuya/2007/01/22/life-and-times-of-bangalore/

Dear Mr Iyer,
These are the only photographs I have, I am afraid, and as I said in my post, I got them via a friend, who got them from the Navadarshanam Trust; I have no idea if they are the original source.
However, you might want to contact Jackfruit Research and Design/Art Teaching Research (ART), based in Bangalore, and see if they have more information and photographs for you. Please email them at

All the best,
anasuya
wow… silk board looks like a miracle…. cool pics… even m.g.road… wish i could go back in time to see those buildings standing….
Wow! I was searching for Brigade road pictures when I came to your page. I stayed in Bangalore in 1980 and then again in 1990 and now in Chennai. When I went in Oct to stay for 2 days, I could not recognize MG Road. How I miss Bangalore as I saw it.
I had actually written a post on the same a few days back!
